Main Aims
-
To provide gist and intensive reading by using the jigsaw technique to get everyone engaged in the reading activity in a way to evaluate their understanding of the texts given.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide them with a speaking activity in which they will be using the target language that will help them work on their productive skills
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
-The first question will be to ask students about their hobbies and what do they like to do in their freetime. It will be a lead in to :" being passionate about something". -next i will show pictures of people who have different passions and be eliciting any words that could be linked to the theme of the texts. -the first picture is a violonist ! who's this person? what does he do ? does he like the piano? or does he like the violin ? How much does he like it ? so we say to "be PASSIONATE ABOUT" The second picture will be about a cook then elicit : does she like playing or does she like cooking so she is passionate about. the last question in the lead in will be about Marck zuckerberg. Eliciting again who the person is and what does he like to do. expected answer : he is passionate about buisness. Ask students to double check their comprehension: is passion something we like a little or we like a lot ?
At this stage of my lesson , I will pre teach the target language using visuals to facilitate the comprehension of vocabulary in the text. I will try to cover as much important content through some pictures. then in the process , I will elicit , CCQ and check the meaning of the language, then write words on the board , check the pronouciation before carrying on with my lesson. here is the vocabulary i will be focusing on with pictures : Musician , buisnessman, hardworking, an artist, success , musical instruments, ( expensive and not to afford ).
-In the prediction activity , I will be presenting the picture of Gio benedetti along with four sentences. I will then ask them to look at the picture of the man and write yes or no next to each sentence. This task will be just a guess so as to have an idea about the upcoming text. CCQ : Alone, I want you to look at the picture of this man, then read the sentences that can be either true or false and guess. Are you going to work alone or in pairs ? Are you going to try to guess the correct sentences or just to read ? Then , make them compare their answers. show the answer key on the board.
-At this stage of my lesson , I will use the Jigsaw technique that enables the students to have a sense of teamwork and engagement. First I will explain how the task will be about. I will split up the class into two groups, provide each group with a text then ask them to read and answer the comprehension questions. then make them compare their work. CCQ: Are you going to work alone or in a group ? Are you going to read the text first or answer the questions ? Are you going to read the same text or each group has a different text ?
In this part of my lesson , I will set up a speaking activity for producing the Target language. In pairs or in groups of three , I will ask the students to find out one thing that they are all passionate about . this activity will help them know each other more and interact. CCQ: Are you going to work alone or in groups ? : Are you going to find out one thing that you are all passionate about or a lot of things ? then let them speak and talk with the whole class.
