To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about present continuos tense in the context of neighbours
Procedure (42-56 minutes)
In the previous lesson, sts learnt new vocabulary about noisy neighbours and they read a text and also did the listening activity about noise rules. After that, they finished the lesson by doing a questionnaire with their partners. To engage students in the context again teacher will ask some questions which are related to the questionnaire they did before : ''What kind of neighbours do you have?'' '' Are they quite?'' '' Do you have any problems with your neighbours?'' '' What kind of problems do you have?'' sts will answer the questions.
Sts will work in pairs and they will look at the picture of flats and discuss why the couple in flat 5 can't sleep.(course book pg:38). You will have 5 minutes. You are going to look at the picture of flats and speak with your partners why the couple in flat 5 can't sleep. T shows the pictures on page 38. CCQ; Are you writing or speaking? (speaking) How many minutes do you have?(5) Sts will listen and check their answers.
T asks some questions about the picture. Look at the picture number 5 p:38. What is he doing?(He is looking outside) Is he laughing?(No) Is he happy? (No). Why (He can't sleep). Sts will listen again and complete the dialogues with verbs from the list.(p:39 grammar part b) After completing the dialogue Sts will check their answers. Then sts will match the dialogues to the pictures.
Focus on one of the picture and sound. Elicit from the students. (The baby is crying). What's happening? Is it happening now or every day?(now) Write on the board.(The baby is crying) What tense is that? (present continuous) how do you form present continuous? what's grammar rule do you use? Subject + be (am,is,are) +verb+ing. Drill.(fingers)-> The baby is crying. The baby's crying. Show difference between full form and contraction.Show the intonation goes up and down.Draw a timeline. Ask students to write on the board the negative form of the sentence. And the question form. Write them on the board. The baby isn't crying. Is the baby crying? and the question on the board.
For further practice sts will do exercises.(sts' book Grammar bank 5B on page 132). '' you will have 4 mins.'' how many minutes do you have? (4) Are you answering the questions quickly or slowly.) (quickly) And t and sts will check the answers. After finishing the exercise sts will listen to the sounds (p: 39 grammar ,f) and they will guess what's happening and write six sentences.
Students will do communication activity. They are going to describe the pictures on page 102 and 107 by using present continuous tense and they will find eight differences.
