Description

In this lesson, students develop reading and speaking skills in the context of online friendship and social networking sites. It will provide an opportunity for them to express their ideas freely using different vocabulary and phrases about the topic.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Read for gist (skim) and for specific and detailed information (scan) in the context of online friendship.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Improve their speaking skill in the context of online friendship and social network sites.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

I intend to provide a short film which shows that some people are applying their smartphones and social networks in the warm-up phase in order to make them guess about the topic and provide the context before pre-reading phase.

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

Pre-teaching vocabulary: I intend to elicit the vocabulary the covered in ex 1.

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To elicit the answers from students.

Get Ss to answer the questions in ex 1. I try to make it a game-like activity so that it becomes more interactive.

Reading for gist and specific information (8-10 minutes) • To make them read quickly/Skim and Scan the text

Get Ss to read the text and do ex 2 a&b. The students are read individually and then check with their group.

Detailed reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to read the text for details individually.

I'll do ex 3. By asking 1 or 2 questions through elicitation technique, I'll be able to take feedback. Also, by monitoring and checking their answers.

Post-reading production (5-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to talk together about the questions and discuss (improve their speaking skill).

Students will do ex 4 in groups. They answer the questions and talk about their own ideas and experiences.
