Description
Lead-in: Nominate the groups. Have Ss. Discuss the question in exercise 1a & b in groups of four. Get each group to report what they think.
Pre-teach vocabulary: Decide on the vocabulary items Ss. might need to understand the text. Find a way to efficiently present a limited number of vocab items necessary for understanding. Will you do a matching activity with lists, or, on individual pieces of paper/gap-fill? Be careful not to teach the ones in the word-guessing exercise 4.
Reading for gist: Write each subheading in ex2 on a different slip of paper. Make copies to fit the number of groups. For example, if you have three groups (of four) make three sets. stick them on the walls outside the class.
make copies of the text to fit the number of groups and cut the text into paragraphs. Give out the texts making sure that each member in a group get a paragraph.
Invite Ss. to outside the class and ask them to find the suitable subheading for each paragraph. Set a time limit.
Once the groups have done, have them sit together and check their work. Ask Ss. What helped them in the text do the task. Clarify the main point in each paragraph. Project the answers to save time.
Reading for details/ Get each student to read the text individually first and then have each group answer Questions 1,2 and 3 in five minutes. Give out the answers in folded sheet. Have them discuss Questions 4 and 5 in groups. Get the groups to report the others what they think.
Word-guessing, Get Ss. to underline the words(ex4) in the text. Demo how to guess meaning from context. Elicit the answers for questions 1 and 2. Direct them to do ex4 to match the meanings with the words. Would you ask Ss. to do it individually/in pairs/in groups ? How would you give feedback ?
Get Ss. to do a class survey by asking questions to as many classmates as they can and nothing down the answers. Have them report what they have found.
