To provide practice and clarification of using obligation and permission modals in the past, in the context of celebrity life style.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in past obligations and permission about childhood experience.
Procedure (41-54 minutes)
Tell ss to think about some of the rules they had to obey and the ones they didn't have to obey when they were in school. Elicit from ss and write feedback on the WB. Focus ss attention on the use of the correct tense. Ask ss to compare the rules they obeyed before and now, which they think is better.
Ask ss to look at the active grammar box and read sentences 1-6 complete the sections A-G with the appropriate verbs in bold. Tell ss some verbs are used more than once. Let ss work individually before discussing their answers with their partners. Get feed back from ss by nominating.
Elicit some examples from ss and use it to highlight the form of the target language. eg. I had to polish my shoe before wearing it. had + verb with to he was allowed to watch tv for 2 hrs. allowed + verb with to We couldn't run very fast. could (not ) + verb without to
Ask ss to read ex. 8 and complete the sentences with modal verbs from the active grammar box. Ss work individually, T monitors and gives help when needed. Tell ss to compare their answers with their partners. Nominate ss to say the correct answers and write it on the WB.
Pair ss and tell them to read the sentences in ex. 9a and correct the mistakes in the sentences. Draw ss attention on the form of the TL. Tell ss to re write the sentences correctly. Let ss read out the correct sentences. show answer key on the projector.
Pair ss to talk about their lives at home when they were young. Encourage ss to use the TL. T models an example on the WB. Monitor to take notes of strengths and errors that may occur during speaking. Allow ss to share their childhood experience with WC. Commend ss efforts. Write problem sentences on the board and discuss with WC.
