Subsidiary Aims

• To provide listening practice using a video about English as a global language
Procedure (60-80 minutes)
show students a map of English speaking countries. Introduce the word Global/ International/ First language/ second language/ foreign language by asking students a series of questions: can you list the countries where English is spoken as a first language? What about your country? what is your first language? your second? what about English?
Tell students that they are going to watch a video about the importance of English as a world language and ask them to take notes of ideas that they are expected to use in discussion about the reasons why English bacame a global language and whether it will remain a global language in the future. Do you think that other languages can become as global as English? Can you give few examples
Tell students that they are expected to match the words with their definitions and to join the sentences together
1/ Write two questions on the board: what do you enjoy most about the English language? Why do you want to learn English? 2/ tell students that they need to write few sentences as an answer to the following two questions 3/ pairs or random pairs (student A: asks the Q and Student B answers)
pick useful language/ praise good points and pick mistakes (pronuciation)
