Main Aims

To provide gist and detailed reading in the context of strange things that happen

Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency speaking practice in giving a news report in the context of strange things that happen

Procedure (42-50 minutes)

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teach vocabulary from the text which ss may find new, but is key to understanding the text. coincidence/ kəʊˈɪnsɪdəns/ chartered/ʧɑːtəd/ sail/seɪl/ leap/liːp/ wander/wɒndə / nap/næp/ Use CCQs to establish understanding of the vocabulary. Drill vocabulary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

Show picture A-C on the projector. draw ss attention on the three pictures. Tell ss to work in pairs and describe what is happening in each picture. Give ss some time to discuss. Get feedback from WC. Give HO to ss and ask them to read through the text quickly to check their predictions. This is to get the main idea of the text. Get feedback from WC.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Ask ss to read the article again,ss read more carefully and answer question 1-3 in ex 8. Let ss discuss their answers in pairs. Nominate ss to give feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Group ss to gather information about strange things that are happening.Mention some names of places they Can use for the news report. Allow few minutes for ss to get their news ready. Each group report their news to WC.
