Description

In this lesson, the Ss learn about the second conditional through guided discovery based on a reading text about "Ideal home". The lesson starts with a discussion about the Students' ideal home. This is followed by reading a short text by the Ss to set the context and later highlighting and clarifying the second conditional using the same text. Later there is a controlled practice and free practice through a pair work.

Procedure

Lead in/ Building context (3-4 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the article

The T asks the Ss where they live and if they like it or not. Then T will show two different pictures to the Ss and asks them to describe the two photos in pairs in 1 minute. Then T asks the WC below questions and gets feedback. Who do you live with? Do you argue about anything? What?

Reading task (4-7 minutes) • To contextualize and introduce the target language

First The T asks the Ss to quickly read a short article in pairs. Then the T asks them to change their partners and ask each other the questions on the HO which will be given to them. After that the T asks some of the students to tell the WC their answers. Then the T asks the Ss to read the whole article in 3 minutes and answer the related questions individually and then compare their answers with their partners. The T checks if there are any mistakes to correct them.

Highlighting target language (4-6 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that the Ss are focused on it.

The Ss are asked to underline the sentences which have "if" in them. Then the T gives them some questions which they should answer on their own. Then they will check their answers with their partners and after that the T will get feedback and corrects them if it is necessary.

Clarifying target language (12-15 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language to the Ss

The T writes one example sentence from the text related to the second conditional on the board and clarifies the meaning by asking CCQs from the Ss. Then T clarifies the target language by breaking down its form and gives the Ss examples of negative,positive and question form. T asks CCQs from the Ss. T will clarify the pronunciation of "Would you" and "I'd have",and explains the intonation in positive and question form to the Ss. Then the T does drilling and asks the Ss to repeat and corrects them if necessary.

Language practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide controlled practice focused on using the language accurately

The T puts the Ss into groups and gives them some incomplete sentences and asks each S to make his/her own sentence complete and discuss it with the other members of the group. In the end the T will asks some Ss to share their group member's answer with the WC. The T gives the Ss feedback and makes error corrections.

Language practice2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and use the language productively

The T gives instructions to the Ss to ask and answer questions on the HO from their partners. The T monitors them while speaking. Then the T asks some of the Ss about their partners answers. In the end the T gives them feedback and makes error corrections.
