Description

In this lesson, ss will read an article about risks children get exposed to and how such adventures help them to face/overcome challenges later in life.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about child adventure in the context of child play and risks

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Children taking risks in the context of outdoor activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows different pictures of children: a child playing happily (Pic. 1); a child sitting sad in the room (Pic.2); a child injured while playing (Pic. 3). Then asks ss to talk about the pictures in pairs. Ss give feedback or share with the class their views about the pictures.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teach vocabulary from the text which ss may find new, but is key to understanding the text. self-esteem // sedentary // resilience // T drills vocabulary and shows stress pattern. Use CCQs to establish understanding of the vocabulary. Give ss a sentence from the text and encourage them to read and use it predict the content.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks ss to read through the text quickly to check their predictions. This is to get the main idea of the text. Give handout to ss to find some specific information in the text. Ask ss to read through quickly without paying attention to every word/ details in the text until they find what they are looking for. students write short answers. Ss do peer checking.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text more carefully to find out which statements are true or false according to the author, allow more time to read intensively to answer questions. Ss do peer checking review. Ss check answer key on the projector.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Pair ss to look at some statements in the article and discuss their views about them. Give HO to ss. Allow some time for ss to think about their answers. Elicit ss opinion If more time; Ss share their childhood experience with the class and state if they agree with the author or not.
