Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to write an E-Mail. At the beginning of the lesson, students will start reading and answering a questionnaire, then Students will learn some new words to write an E-Mail at the end I will get their feedback.

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will be better able to write semi- formal emails in the context of providing information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Providing and clarifying language which learners may find useful for writing.

Procedure

Lead in (1-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the theme of the lesson.

I will tell Ss that an American teacher is coming to work and live in Istanbul and he needs some information about living in Istanbul, then I will ask them if they would like to help him.

Preparing to write (3-6 minutes) • To provide ideas to write an email and to prepare them for the task.

I will provide Ss with a questionnaire and ask them to answer it individually to let them know how to provide the American teacher with information, but first, I will give instructions, then I will ask ICQs. after that, I will give the questionnaire to let them answer it. when they finish, I will ask them to work in pairs to compare the answers.

Useful language (5-10 minutes) • To provide and clarify language which learners may find useful for completing the writing task.

I will give the learners a matching task to learn few new words and I will ask them to write 2 sentences from the questionnaire to let them learn how to use useful sentences in the context of writing an E-Mail, then I will get the feedback. Before giving HOs, I will give them instructions and ICQs for the matching and sentences writing tasks. Then, I will give a question ( does the teacher, who wrote the E-Mail want me to give him information about living in Istanbul or does he want a Turkish person to give him this information?) to let them read it from the E-Mail, which I worte to encourage them read it afer I give them instructions and ICQs.

Writing task (5-10 minutes) • For learner to practice writing an email.

I will give the students a form of a semi-formal email and ask them to write 3 sentences about living in Istanbul and I will also give instructions and ICQs. I will tell the students that they can use the language, which they learnt from the past tasks.

Feedback and error correction on written task (5-10 minutes) • To provide language feedback based on the task.

When the learners finish writing, I will put their emails on the board and give them checking content questions to let learners check that their partners write the wanted information in the emails and I will ask them to start checking after I give them instructions and ICQs. While the learners check the contents of the emails, I will be checking their writing accuracy, then I will ask them to vote for the best email and finally, I will correct their writing errors on the board.
