Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and inference reading practice using a text about the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his science fiction and adventures stories . In the context of supernatural and science fiction readings .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review in the context of the life of a science fiction and advenrtures wrirter .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T plays a 2-minute video to introduce the most famous detective stories of Sherlock Holmes. T asks Ss to watch the video and predict what the text is about. Ss to discuss in a minute their answers in groups or pairs.

Pre-Reading (2-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible,reveling unblocking vocabularies

T elicits some lexical items ( Choas - Eccentric -alchohlic - adventures- deduction ) T divides Ss into 2 groups. T chests 5 cards and 5 definitions asking Ss to match and stick the answers on WB. Who finishes early win the game. -Each group will have 5 items and 5 definitions. You have 2 minutes to match the definitions and stick them on the WB. Who finishes first will be the winner group. ICQs: Are you going to match cards?(Yes) How many minutes do you have? (2 minutes ) -The winner group intervenes and correct the other group and T to interfere if help needed.

While-Reading/Skimming (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T chests the text and asks Ss to skim quickly and find the suitable title for the text. -Ss to read individually and choose a title. - Pair checks. -T revels the correct answer and asks Ss if they agree.

While-Reading/ Scanning #2 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T chests a handout of True or False statements. Ss scan the text and answer the exercise in pairs and the first pair finishes will stand up. Other pairs answer questions and the winners to agree or disagree with them. Quickly read the text and put True or False : 1- Sir Arthur Doyle was sent to a boarding school in London. ( F ) 2- Dr Bell could diagnose patients through their appearances. ( T ) 3-Sir Doyle had to bring Sherlock back to life because people asked him to do. ( T ) 4- He was not fascinated with supernatural myths or books. ( F ) 5-Sir Doyle investigated spiritualism and tried to communicate with his dead family. ( T ) 6-Sir Doyle died on July 7th,1930. ( T )

Post-Reading Productive Skills (2-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks Ss to write about : What is your favourite book? What type of book is it? Who's your favourite writer? T answers first and then give Ss 2 minutes to write their preferences. -Ss read their answers to their partners. -T monitors for error correction and feedback.
