Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • Prepositions of place(Grammar)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-0 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

12:15-12:20 I will start off the lesson by showing Ss a picture of a house. I will ask them a few questions in order to get them answer using the preposition of places since the main aim of previous lesson that my colleague taught was about the usage of prepositions. Questions: What do you see in this picture? - A house.- Where is the house? - In front of, behind, opposite etc.- This stage won't last long since on the second part of the lesson I will teach some types of houses.

Useful Language (5-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

12:20-12:30 I will show them through pictures different kinds of houses. Before I show the words, I will try to elicit from them. For each word, I will give a brief explanation and then drill the word.

Exposure (7-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

12:30-12:40 For this part of the lesson, I will use the dictogloss activity. I will tell Ss that I will read something short and they have to listen very carefully, but before I start reading I will split the class in groups of 4 or 5 depending on the number. I will use the names of the types of houses to separate them (flat, castle, hut, detached, semi-detached). They need to write down words, but not the whole sentence. I will read for a second time again and in the end after I have finished the Ss have to reconstruct what they written down. In the beginning they will try to work alone. I will give them 2 minutes to work individually and then they will check in pairs. Before moving on to the next stage, they will read what they just wrote down.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

12:40-12:50 In this stage, I will ask Ss to describe their homes. "Please, now you will write in a piece of paper about your own home. Think about where it is, how big it is, how many rooms it has etc. You have 5 minutes to finish writing. Then you will find a person who wants to swap (they will already know this word) his/her home with yours. At this part of the activity, depending on the number of students, I will choose Ss either to mingle in the class or split them in groups, so that there won't be a big confusion. ICQs What are you going to write about? Do you have 10 minutes? Will you find a person to swap his/her own home with yours? As they start working, I will go around to monitor and take notes of errors they might do.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

12:50-13:00 In the previous stage, Ss are given the task of writing about their home and trying to find somebody who wants to swap his/her own home. After they have finished doing so, I will ask students to read about the descriptions they received from swapping. "Now, you will read your papers, but listen carefully because in the end you will choose which is your favorite house." After they have read the descriptions, I will ask them to vote for their favorite home. "Ok, now that you finished reading, you will choose which of the homes is your favorite." In case of errors, I will write them on the board and correct.
