Description

In this lesson, the students will be introduced some blocking vocabulary. Receptive skill of reading will be developed by reading a passage for comprehension through gist exercise. Work on the productive skill of speaking will also be worked on at the end of lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text entitled "the millionaire with a secret" in the context of success in life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary including "dyslexia, gamble, recession, and broke" in the context of the millionaire.

Procedure

Stage 1 (lead in) (5-6 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson and make the lesson interesting for the students

The teachers asks the students whether they know somebody who is a millionaire? Do they know how the person became millionaire? Do they like to become a millionaire?

Stage 1 (pre-reading) (7-10 minutes) • Introducing the blocking words

The teacher introduces the blocking words by elicitation. The teacher makes clarification on meaning, form and pronunciation (MFP). The teacher gives the students an exercise to complete.

Stage 2 (while-reading) (7-10 minutes) • comprehending the passage

The passage is given to the students without having any title. The teacher gives the passage to the students and asks them to gist it and come of with an appropriate title for it. Then the teacher gives another gist activity for which the students should go through the passage quickly once again and put the events in the exercise in order.

Stage 3 (post-reading) (7-9 minutes) • The students are given a chance to practice speaking by using what they learnt from the passage

The students are given the following topic: what do you do if you win 1 million pound? The teacher asks the students to think about the given topic individually for some minutes and then talk about it. Other students are to listen to the person whose turn is to talk. The whole class may be asked some clarification questions about what each of them says.

Stage 4 (feedback and error correction) (5-10 minutes) • To give students feedback on what they say and to correct some of the major errors they had in grammar, vocabulary or pronounciation

The teacher draw the students attention by telling them what he will do if he wins 1 million pound. He can use the same sentences as the students used by with correct grammatical form, vocabulary and/or pronunciation.
