Beginner level

Description

In this lesson I am going to revise positive and negative forms of Present Simple tense, also I am going to teach the students how to ask questions and give short answers using 'Do/Does'.Mostly I am planning to cover Present Simple forms in 3rd person. I will give the students different types of communicative activities to let them practice positive, negative and question phrases in Present Simple using some verbs describing people's daily routines. I will make sure they have learnt how to talk about themselves and about any 3rd person using the presented models.

Main Aims

  • Grammar: Present Simple tense - revision of positive and negative forms, presentation of question forms, short answers to these questions and explanation of use of the 3rd person form.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking about somebody's daily routine using the forms of the verb in Present Simple, especially in 3rd person.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To revise the Present Simple positive, negative forms and eliciting the questions forms

- Start asking the ss about the previous teacher's daily routine. e.g.: - Does he wake up at 7 a.m. or 9 a.m.? - Does he has breakfast in the morning?.... - Engage the ss to talk about him trying to use the 3rd person forms of the verbs. Elicit the forms they may know, also elicit the short answer forms ('Yes, he does'/ 'No, he doesn't'). - Drill all the phrases they give.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Stick one photo of your friend on the WB. Stick some more pictures with everyday actions under the photo.Tell them about your friend. Then elicit your friend's daily routine by asking some questions: e.g. Does she go to work every day? Does she get up late? Then drill and write the examples on the WB. e.g. She works in a bank. She doesn't get up late. Does she eat breakfast in the morning? - Yes, she does/ No, she doesn't. Give the model. I, you, we, they + v1 She, he /+ v 1+ /s/es - positive sentences; Do / I, you, we, they/ + v1? Does / he,she/ + v1? - interrogative sentences; I, you, we, they/ + don't/+ v1 She, he/ + doesn't/+ v1 - negative sentences Try to elicit verbs 'to have', 'to go' etc. in 3rd person. Show that they are exceptions. e.g.I go/ she goes. Drill first positive, then negative, then question phrases.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To check the use of Present Simple tense forms

Give the ss HO 1. Ask them to choose the correct forms of the verbs in the ex. pepared by the teacher (including positive, negative forms and questions). Prepare the cards from the ex. The ss should stick the answers on the WB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide the ss with the TL practice and prepare them to the next communicative task

Give the ss HO2 (the chart). Fold it, then ask them to write several sentences about their daily routine. After they have filled the first part of the chart, ask to unfold it, propose the ss to ask their parnters about their daily routine using the questions they made and tick the yes/no boxes according to their partner answer.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled speaking practice

Mingle: Someone who...? Go around the class and find WHO... - get up early, take a shower in the morning, etc. Give them one example before the start. ex.have lunch. - Do you have lunch? Yes/ I do/ No, I don't. Then the teacher checks: Does Fatma get up early? Yes,she does./ No, she doesn't.
