Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about What's Jessie's favorite food. Then, circle the things she has for her meals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To get more familiar with wh-questions and try to use them in the post-text as a speaking task.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After greeting, teacher says "I have bread and coffee with milk for breakfast everyday" then ask the question from other students and also, add "for lunch"- "for dinner" to the question in order to elicit different kind of food. Then, teacher asks "what else we can have?" as to elicit other food and drink. Furthermore, teacher asks "how many meals do we have?" and elicits the name of them (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Books closed. Teacher says "I have a sandwich and soda for dinner, I love a sandwich and soda, dinner is my favorite meal". Then, teacher asks "when I say dinner is my favorite meal, does it mean that I like it a lot or not?" Students answer "a lot". After that, teacher wants them to listen carefully and teacher repeats "favorite" and wants them to repeat, first, individually then as a chore and write it on the board. Furthermore, teacher asks some of the students "what's your favorite meal?" and "what do you have for breakfast/lunch/dinner?"

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Books closed. Teacher draws a girl on the board and introduces her as Jessie and adds she is from America but her parents are from China, we want to listen to her to know what is her favorite meal? ICQs: teacher asks "what is her name? where is she from? where are her parents from?" teacher asks "what we want to know?" in order to elicit the question "what is her favorite meal?" Teacher plays the audio and after that wants them to check that with their partners and then with the teacher.

While-Listening #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Books closed, teacher shows them through his book that there is a box and in the box we have three parts: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. And in each part for example: Breakfast, we have different things, cereal, fish, rice, tea, and etc.Teacher wants them to listen again and circle, teacher mimes circling on the board, what she has for "breakfast, lunch, dinner". Teacher asks them "do you write what she has or just circle?" "what do you circle?" After that, teacher wants them to open their books and look at that part then asks "are you ready" and plays the audio. Then, teacher wants them to check them with their partners and after that with the teacher. Then, teacher plays the audio to check the answers with the students.

Post-Listening (17-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher writes on the board "do what have you breakfast for?" and asks is this question in order? and wants them to help him put them in order. Then, gives them some worksheets and wants them to put the questions in order. After that, wants them to check their answers and then with the whole class. Then, says that "I want you to stand up and ask 2 or 3 questions from other students, you should ask from 2 or 3 students in the class and remember their answers" Then asks students to stand up, he chooses one of the questions and ask the question from one of them and listen to the student's answer and goes for the other student. ICQs: "I asked just from the list yes?" , "after asking questions I changed my partner yes?" Then, teacher wants two students to do that. And then all the students. In the meanwhile, teacher monitors them for any mistakes or errors and takes notes. When it is finished, teacher writes the mistakes on the board to correct them with the students. Then, ask some questions to get feedback.
