Description

In this lesson, students use will and be going to to make predictions about the future. Students continue with the topic of energy by making predictions regarding the future of renewable and non-renewable energy. Students have the opportunity to personalize the lesson by making their own predictions about the future of Istanbul.

Main Aims

To provide practice of future predictions in the context of energy and the future of Istanbul

Subsidiary Aims

To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of making predictions.

Procedure (36-49 minutes)

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Get students interested in the topic, connect the grammar lesson with the previous lesson

Teacher shows Powerpoint with jumbled words and asks students to unscramble the words. Once students finish, Teacher asks, what does endless mean? what types of energy are in the pictures? do you think this energy is endless? Teacher then tries to elicit language for talking about the future by asking, what will happen in the future? are people going to use more nuclear energy? what will happen to the planet?

Focus on Meaning: making predictions with will and going to (10-12 minutes) • To give students opportunity to consider future predictions with will and going to

Teacher tells students to look at the Powerpoint and consider the predictions for the year 2033. Teacher has students work in pairs and discuss if they agree or disagree and to give reasons. Students then report back to the class.

Focus on Form: making predictions with will and going to (10-12 minutes) • To give students an opportunity to practive the form and to consider when will and going to are appropriate

Teacher asks students, can we know the future? (no) can we make predictions? (yes) Teacher underlines adverbs and asks students how sure these predictions are, drawing a scale with one end being 'not very sure' and the other end being 'very sure' Teacher elicits responses from students. Teacher then flips the slide and to form groups and discuss the grammar rules, filling in the blanks with responses. Students then practice the dialogue in pairs.

Focus on Pronunciation: shortened forms of will and be going to (3-5 minutes) • To expose students to contracted and shortened forms of will and be going to

Teacher has students read the dialogues with the full forms and drills accordingly. Teacher explains to students that people usually use contractions and 'gonna' in conversation. Teacher demonstrates and then drills the shortened forms.

Speaking for fluency (10-15 minutes) • To give students a speaking for fluency task making their own predictions with will and going to

Teacher tells students, The population of Istanbul will be 16.6 million in 2023. Teacher then explains that students will make predictions about Istanbul in groups of three. Each group will be a year: 2018, 2023, 2033. Students make predictions, writing notes if necessary. Students share with the class.
