Description

In this lesson, students are going to read about different weather conditions and how weather affects people's moods on page 36. The lesson starts with some questions about students' favorite weather. They brainstorm as many words as possible. A couple of new or blocking words will be pre-taught. Students look at the title and try to guess what is the text about. Then they read it once and answer the question in title and say if Santa Ana winds have effect on people (skimming for the main idea of the passage). After that they read the article again and answer true or false questions and also give their reasons (scanning and close reading). Students try to guess the meaning of the highlighted words and look them up with their partners. Finally they should discuss this question: Describe the typical weather in Iran in different seasons.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of weather words in the context of how is the weather in Iran in different seasons

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts the class by asking how is the weather today and if it is students' favorite weather. Then they have one minute to talk about their favorite weather and brainstorm as many words as possible in relation to weather with their partners.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

students look at the title and say their ideas about it. They discuss if weather has ever had any positive or negative effects on their own life or that of their family members'. The following words should be pre-taught here: Make tempers boil, drive some body nuts, irritable and assault.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

students start skimming the text to see if their guess was right about weather effects on people's moods. They will also answer this question: what is the main idea of the passage?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students start scanning the text and answering true or false questions and also giving their reasons. They should say which part of the passage helped them to understand the answer. They can check their answers in pairs. Then they should try to guess the meaning of highlighted words in pairs

Post-Reading/Listening (4-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Now as a post reading or activation part students have a couple of minutes to talk about typical weather conditions in Iran in different seasons in their groups.
