In this lesson, students are going to read a text for the gist and detailed comprehension in the context of healthy life style. It will be followed by a speaking task which helps students to develop oral fluency on the topic by asking and answering questions about their healthy and unhealthy life style. each

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • to generate my students' interest in the topic of the reading(healthy life style)

T asks students some questıons for example: how do you usually start the day? Do you usually eat breakfast? What do you eat for breakfast? Do you usually exercise? Ss are asked to work ın paırs.WCFB

Exposure/pre teach vocab (12-14 minutes) • To provide context for the target language

Teacher projects the images of healthy and unhealthy food and actıvıtıes for example: do exercise, drink alcohol, hamburgers, fried food, smoking, heart attack, fruit.The teacher will point to one of the pictures and ask the students some questıons. For example: Is it bad? Which part of the body is it bad for?Should we eat a lot or a little?and a big what ? to elicit the word portion here and then ask the students to share their ideas in pairs.WCFB. It will be followed by projecting or sticking pictures of a healthy heart and unhealthy heart.The teacher will give each group some slips including some phrases such as go to the gym, get stressed, lose weight, stop smoking, do exersise, have a heart attack, eat fried food, high/low in fat, drink alcohol.Students will be asked to stick them on the healthy or unhealthy heart ın groups.WCFB. The teacher will ask them to give her some advise to have a healthy heart and will elicit the word 'tip.'

Reading for gist (4-5 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for general underestanding

The teacher will give the students the reading text hand out without the title. And a hand out including three titles to choose one of them.Then check ın pairs, WCFB

Reading for specific (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information(scanning)

The teacher will give the students a hand out including some questions e.g How many grams of salt is it good to eat every day? How many adults die of heart disease in Britain every hour? Students will be asked to read the text quickly (scanning) answer the questıons.Then check ın pairs, WCFB

reading for detail (5-6 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension

The teacher will give the students a hand out including some questions e.g Do women have more heart attacks than men?Is drinking alcohol always bad for your heart?Students will be asked to read the text to answer these questıons.Then check in pairs. Students are asked to write the answers on the white board.WCFB

Post reading (semi controlled practice) (8-10 minutes) • To develope oral fluency over the text

The teacher will give students a hand out including some questions to ask each other.Students are asked to stand up and find a partner and talk about the questıons and then change their partners.WCFB .The teacher will ask the class whether they have a healthy partner or not.

Post reading ( free practice) (4-5 minutes) • To develope oral fluency on the text

Students are asked to talk about Turkish people lifestyle in groups. Do they eat healthy food? What about the heart attack is it common in Turkey?WCFB
