In this lesson, students will read an article on how an international bank works to ease cultural misunderstandings.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a bank in the context of work culture.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and writing practice related to business.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students if they have experiences at work which have been different from their usual situation.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this section I will go through the text and introduce vocabulary that may be new and illicit meaning and provide pronunciation practice. New vocabulary will be written on whiteboard. 8-10 mins

Reading: A (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with gist and specific information reading task

The students will be given a text on Standard Bank which they will read individually and categorise the statements 1-5 under headings a-c. 3-4 mins to read: Then illicit answers from class. 5-6 mins

Reading: B (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

Ask students to read the article again: 2 mins Then ask them to answer questions, 1a and b, 2. Assist individuals: 5-6 mins Then ask the class to discuss the answers. 4-6mins but : conjunction : strong /bʌt/ : used to introduce an added statement, usually something that is different from what you have said before:

Speaking: C (4-6 minutes) • To provide opportunity for students to reflect on previous discussion.

Ask the students to create a list of topics that they think should be covered in cultural training course. They will write these on white board. 4-6 mins

Writing: D (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to digest the text and summarise what they've learned.

Ask the students to write a paragraph using the 'Standard Bank' article in order to provide tips for people doing business in UK. If students not able to finish, give as homework. Check work as it progresses. 4-7 mins
