Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of the contractions aren't, you're, we're, I'm, she's, he's, they're, etc. in the context of travel.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel using contractions.
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Use gesture to show ss that "they're" is a contraction of "they are" and the same for "we're" and "aren't." Drill chorally the contractions "we're", "they're", "you're" and "aren't". After the drilling write the contractions on WB. Tell the ss to listen and count the contractions in the text that you read out (Contractions_HO3). Ask in plenary how many contractions they heard. Make a note of the numbers on the board. Distribute HO3 and instruct ss to keep face down. Ask them to read HO3 and the first person to shout out the exact number of contractions wins the game (there are 14). Write a marker sentence on WB: "Michael and Emma aren't here yet but they're going to arrive in the next few days." FB: ask ss to come to WB and underline the contractions. Write "contractions" on WB.
Instruct ss that they need to fill in the gaps by chesting HO and fill in the first one for them to demo. Split in to pairs. Distribute HO and give them two minutes to fill in the gaps. Monitor their work. Stop the PW after two minutes or allow for extra time if anyone has not finished. Hand out the answer key and tell them to check their answers with their partner.
Chest HO2 and demo to ss how to fill in the gaps individually. ICQs: Will you work alone? (yes) Will you fill in the gaps? (yes) Split in to pairs and hand out answer key. Instruct ss to work in pairs and underline all of the contractions. Monitor and perform error correction.
Split ss in to groupings and give cut-outs of negatives "we are not", "they are not", etc and their contractions and instruct the groups to play Pelmanism game where the cutouts are face down and ss pick two. If they match they keep the cards or put them back face down. The group that picks up all of the cards first wins. Monitor the GW. Check for cheating! FB, answer key on WB (stick cards up): "We aren't / we're not = we are not They aren't / they're not = they are not"
Split ss in to new A and B pairs. Chest HO (where are they) and place two chairs facing each other in front of WB. Ask for a volunteer and hand them one half of HO and sit opposite each other. Start by asking first question and when ss answers demo writing the answer down on your half of the HO. Elicit question from ss and instruct him/her to write down the answer on their sheet. Instruct ss not to show each other their half of the HO. ICQs: Will you look at you partner's worksheet? (no) Will you ask each other questions? (yes) Will you write down the answers? (yes) Monitor PW and error correct if needed. FB, ask one pair to read out details of one couple then ask another pair for the next couple and so on. Error correct.
