Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in conversations in the context of flat problems

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for reporting a problem and asking for a solution in the context of flat problems

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put a picture of an electrician, a carpenter and a plumber on the board. Give them a set of cards and ask them to match the problems with the pictures. Let them check on each other.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks

Recap with SS through flash cards. Ask SS to say the word they see on the card. Try quicker challenges

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Give SS prompt cards and give them 5 minutes to prepare. Demo with the SS. Each student should speak to 3 different people about his problem and try to solve their problems. ICQs: How long will you prepare? 5 minutes How many people will you ask? 3 Will you write anything? No Give feedback on language and content.

Productive Task (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills through freer practice

Divide SS into pairs using colour codes. Each pair should prepare for a big flat problem and its solution. Student A is the flat owner and Student B is the worker. Give them 10 minutes to prepare before they go out and take the puppets to act the whole situation. Play music in the background. ICQs: How long will you prepare? 10 mins Will you write anything? No

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Mix correct sentences with wrong ones and put them on the board. Ask the SS to decide which ones are correct and which are wrong. Let them correct the wrong ones in pairs then report to the whole class.
