Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using some articles from newspapers in the context of the media.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of some words from the news in the context of the media.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start a discussion with the students asking them if they read newspapers or not. I will also ask them about the topics of newspapers and I will show them a short video called The newspaper. It's about someone's opinion of the content of a newspaper. I will ask them after watching the video if they agree with her or not.

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will teach the students some key words before their reading. I will elicit the meaning from them through a task. They will work in pairs and match the words to its pictures. Then, I will give them the feedback. I'll use some CCQs to check their understanding of the meaning. Then, they will repeat the words after me and I will write them on the board. I will also ask the students to predict what they will read. I will use the coursebook to show them some headlines and, in pairs too, they will choose two headlines and try to guess what their articles are talking about.

While-Reading #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

I will ask the students to read the articles quickly and match them with their headlines. I will give them two minutes to do this. Then, I will ask them to check their answers in pairs, and in the end, I will check the answers with them.

While-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

I will ask the students to read the articles again carefully and answer some questions about some specific information. They will check their answers in pairs. Then, I will check the answers with them.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will divide them into two groups and ask them to discuss two questions about what they read. I will monitor while they are speaking to get my feedback, and If I catch any mistakes, I will correct them.
