Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about how to read for gist and for details by reading text about celebrity worshipping. The lesson starts with a discussion about celebrities. This followed by setting a discussion activity . Students will learn new terms which will help them to understand the text. Students will skim and scan to answer the comprehension questions. Students will take notes of the main points in the article, they will discuss in groups. They will listen to a recording and compare their answers then share their own thoughts about the subject.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about celebrity worshippers in the context of Fame

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about a discussion of the notes someone took about the article

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will stick pictures of different international and Turkish celebrities on the WB. I will ask students about the names of the celebrities and what they are famous for. After getting answers from the students I will ask them if they think that those celebrities have a lot of fans. I will ask students to discuss in pairs their favorite celebrities and what they do. If they are not fans of any celebrity they can tell their partners about someone they know who is a fan of a celebrity. I will get feedback from each pair. ICQ: :" Are you working in group or in pairs ? " and ask a student: " what will you talk about to your partner?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In groups of three, I will give students a matching activity, I will stick five different words from the text on the walls and students will be asked to put the definitions under their right terms. I will ask students if they agree on their answers then I will give them the answer key. Then I will do MFP of the vocabulary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will give students gist task, I will ask them to give me a general idea about what the text is talking about. Students will read the text individually and they will answer the question. I will ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then do WCF.. I will provide students with a gap fill task where they need to reread the text one more time to be able to answer the question. Students will work individually and when they finish they check their answers with their neighbor. Then I will elicit student’s answers on the board as WCF.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask students to scan the text one more time individually and try to remember detailed pieces of information from the text in order to answer the comprehension question. I will ask students to hide the text before they start answering the questions. In groups of three, students will take at look at the text and discuss their answers. The whole class will share their answers as WCF. ICQ: "will you look at the text while answering the questions?"

Post-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to note of the main points in the article and the research it describes. They will also share their own opinion about the issue mentioned in the article. Students will discuss in there group. I will ask students to listen to the audio of a person discussing the notes she took and compare their thoughts.
