Main Aims

  • To provide sts with a skimming and detailed reading practice in the context of a text about the life of a famous painter

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice the past form of certain irregular verbs as a lexis activity
  • To give sts a controlled speaking practice of the lexis which they will revise

Procedure

Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson and elicit & introduce certain topic-related vocabulary

- T sticks picture of "Mona Lisa" on the board. T "Do you know this?" "Is it a photograph?" "Do you draw it?" - T sticks pictures of Bob Ross and Salvador Dali on the board. T "Who are they?" "Do you know them?" "What are their jobs?" to elicit painting, painter. - T sticks a picture of Istanbul Modern on the board. T "Do you know this place?" "What is inside?"

Gist Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging reading exercise before the detailed reading

T chests the HO. T "There are 6 sentences and 6 pictures here. Read the sentences quickly and match them with the pictures. You can write a,b,c... on these boxes. You have three minutes." ICQs: How many minutes do you have? Where are you going to write? Sts check in pairs. T projects the HO on the board. Sts come to the board and write their answers.

Lexis Activity (12-15 minutes) • To test students knowledge of certain verbs' past forms

T gives students a matching exercise with the verbs in base and past forms. T "There are 9 verbs here. Match them with their correct past form. You will work alone." ICQs: Are you going to write your answers? (no) Are you going to match the verbs with their past forms? (yes) Students check in groups. T projects the Ho on the board. Sts come to the board and match the verbs. - T clarifies the meaning-related problems with CCQs. T drills the pronunciation of the past forms.

Detailed Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a more challengign reading exercise in which sts will use the revised past forms

T chests the HO. T "We will read this text. There are 7 blanks in the text. Fill these blanks with the past form of the verbs we practiced. You have 5 minutes." ICQ: How many minutes? (5) Are you going to use the base form? (no) Which form are you going to use? (past) Sts check in pairs. T projects the text on the board. Sts come to the board and stick the papers with the words on the correct part.

Post-Reading Activity (8-10 minutes) • To give sts a controlled speaking practice about the text with the lexis they have revised

T divides the sts into two groups. T gives sts HOs with questions about the text. Sts answer the questions using the past forms. T gives instant FB on the form when necessary.
