Useful Language for summarizing the texts
Procedure (36-46 minutes)
I will show the famous people's photos in order to generate interest in the topic and have the students have an idea about what they will talk about.
I will use the photos in order to elicit the pre-teach lexis which include the words; shopaholics, stalking,a bank executive and the pop diva. So that they are going to be clear about the topic that they are going to work on. Afterwards, the students will be given the articles' headlines and they will discuss what each story is about in groups.
I will ask the students if they remember the questions in exercise 2 in page 90 first and I am going to ask them to think and take notes about the phrases that they can use in order to summarise the texts, reading passages and so on. When they are thinking, I will write some of the important phrases on the board and I will use CCQs to make sure that they understand what are these phrases for.. After they come up with their ideas, I will have them compare the phrases and I will do MFP for these phrases ; The main point the article is making is that.. Basically, what happened is... (for summarising) It raises the question of whether... I'd be interested to know what other people think about..
I will ask them to think about their favourite famous actor or actress etc. and they will pretend that they were with them in a house party all day and at the end of the day they will meet their friends and summarise their day which was spent with those famous people. The students are going to work in pairs, they are going to change their peers and they will do the same thing.
While they are talking about their days, I will monitor and listen to them. I will take some notes about the mistakes they can do during speaking. I will write them on the board and correct their mistakes.
