Procedure (35-53 minutes)
lead-in Put some pictures that include different machines. Then ask the students What machines do they use the most? What are the machines that they can't live without? give them time to think. Ask them to discuss in pairs.
give the students flash cards and ask them to match the words with the right pictures by sticking it to the wall to check the meaning of the vocabulary they might know. pre-teach the following words: tram /træm/ scooter /ˈskuː.t̬ɚ/ ferry /ˈfer.i/
Give the students sets of picture labels including transport vocabulary and ask them in groups or pairs to arrange them from fast to slow. ask them to check the others groups arrangement and ask them about their opinion. Quick whole class feedback. ask the students, how do you come to the class every day? try to elicit: by+ name of transport ask the students to work in pairs to answer ex3 in the studens' book
show on the board a list of numbers and ask the students to find them in the passage in 50 seconds. give the students two example and ask them to do the rest. check that the students well understood the instructions clearly by using ICQs questions.
ask the students that they need to read the passage carefully to complete the missing numbers from the list on the board it is important to inform the students not to panic they are only guessing.
