Description

In this lesson, students will practise asking and answering questions through a "dialogue building" technique.

Main Aims

To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking and answering questions in the context of jobs

Subsidiary Aims

To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of jobs

Procedure (31-38 minutes)

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put the map of Egypt on the board. Elicit: El-Qahira fish-shamal. Aswan fil-ganub. Put the picture of the Luxor Temple. Elicit: Luxor. Point to the map: Luxor fin-noss. Put the pictures of Nabil and Hanaan (old and new) then the surprised face. Elicit: mofag'ah Ask: Nabil w Hanaan feen? Elicit: Luxor.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Elicit from the SS the story of Nabil and Hanaan. Pre-teach Vocab: طباخ فندق مطعم مفاجأة مرشدة سياحية بعيد قريب حوالي بقالك قد إيه Make sure they understand the meaning of those words to be able to use them in the dialogue.

Highlighting & Clarification (14-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use prompt cards to build the dialogue. For each line: elicit using the prompt, give model, check meaning if necessary, drill in chorus then open pairs. Always recap before each new line. After every even number of lines go through the dialogue T-SS then switch roles. After every even number of lines, get SS to work in closed pairs saying the lines, then switch roles. Give SS handout of the whole dialogue at the end.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Change pairs and let SS say the whole dialogue in their new pairs. Play music in the background.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Let the SS carry out a quick survey about their jobs. Each one should ask 3 different colleagues and fill the info in the survey. ICQs: How many people will you ask? 3 Will you speak in English or in Arabic? Arabic Will you write anything? Yes Give them 5 minutes to finish this.
