Description

In this lesson,students will discuss some party types related to the pictures shown on the WB. They will have the chance to think about the content within their own experiences. They will follow up by reading a text about how to throw a party.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and deduction reading practice using a text about how to throw a party

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of types of party and the related nouns about having a party

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows a picture of herself and ask what kind of an event it is. The students check the picture and predict the reason of celebration and the type of party. They talk about the details of the picture such as the theme, atmosphere as a brainstorming activity.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher asks students to discuss other types of parties that they have attended before with their partner. They talk about the atmosphere, theme, music and may be the party games that they come across.Then the teacher sticks some pictures on the WB and hands over the names of the party types and divide them into two groups. To put the right name under the picture, one student from a group sticks correct name on the board.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher hands over the text with three possible titles and asks them to skim the text to find the appropriate title. It is important to give clear instructions to the students for reading as they may tend to read throughly. The students work in pairs and the teacher gives FB.

While-Reading (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher this time, asks students to have a look at the missing sub-heads in each paragraphs.The teacher gives the sub-heads as a seperate column within a colured paper and within a pair work , she asks them to find the correct title.

Post-Reading (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher divides the students into two groups and announces a game. Each group will have to complete missing words of sentences whose vocabulary is eliminated from the text. The first group that completes the mission becomes the winner.
