To listen to a conversation to guess the meaning of the phrases from contextual clues.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Teacher tells a story about two people who are close friends. They plan to go to a party and one of them has got an ugly dress. Students write indirect meaning sentences to ask the made up character to change the dress.
Teacher hands out a worksheet showing a picture and statements. Teacher tells them to think about what they see in the picture and elicit some guesses for the unkonwn words. Then, tell them that they are going to listen a dialogue.
The teacher asks students to be careful with the intonation and word stress while listening and ask them follow the dialogue from the hand outs.
The teacher asks students to pay attention of the highlighted phrases as they are the examples of indirect meaning sentences.
The teacher asks students to match the highlighted phrases with their more direct meaning ones as mentioned below the dialogue.
