Description

In this lesson, students learn about adjectives, prepositions as well as collocations related to feelings and opinions through humanistic engagement based on past experiences, feelings and opinions on areas of life that could be different in other places. The lesson starts with a discussion about food, weather, customs, clothing,etc.This is followed by a diagnostic test where students' current knowledge and ability to pronounce and understand the meaning of adjectives about feelings are tested.The next step is to clarify issues students have not only with adjectives' pronunciation and meaning but with collocations as well; that is to clarify issues of prepositions' collocation with adjectives, and the grammatical forms that follow such prepositions. Finally, there is a written controlled practice to test learners 'use of the new lexis they have learnt and an oral free practice via a follow-up questioning technique to encourage communication.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context through a person anecdote and engage students in the areas of life that could be difficult in other places.

The teacher introduces herself, then checks the Sts names.To set the context, the teacher starts with a Turkish traveller anecdote, then launches a discussion related to food, weather, traditions, clothing, dos, don'ts etc.in different places all over the world, then write those items on the board.The next step is to shape the classroom seating as well as interaction by putting Sts in pairs and get them rely on the board points to share their experiences. After providing Sts with feedback, the aims of the lesson are to be set.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

the teacher tests students' prior or current knowledge and ability to understand and pronounce the meaning of adjectives about feelings and opinions.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

This step is to clarify issues to students not only with adjectives' meaning and pronunciation but with collocations as well; that is to clarify issues of prepositions' collocation with adjectives, and the grammatical forms that follow such prepositions.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

There is a written controlled practice to test learners 'use of the new lexis they have learnt.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide Sts with an oral free practice of adjectives, propositions and collocations.

At the end of the lesson, there is an oral free practice via a follow-up questioning technique where Sts interview their partners.The teacher gets the Sts in pairs or small groups to ask each other follow- up questions, for example, St1: I'm usually satisfied with Turkish Air Lines services. Sts2: Really? what kind of services do they provide? Such practice is for motivating Sts to communicate effectively for consolidating what they will learn during the lesson.
