Materials
Main Aims
-
To introduce and practice positive and negative forms of the “be” verb
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide controlled speaking practice of the target language
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
The teacher introduces himself and asks students to introduce themselves.
The teacher reminds the students of the conversations they listened to in the previous lesson. He tells them that they are going to circle the correct form of the verb in this exercise, and then listen to the conversations to see if their answers are correct or not. After students listen, the teacher asks students to check their answers in pairs and finally elicits/gives the answers in whole class feedback.
The teacher asks the students to read the grammar part sentences and tell him the sentences. He writes them on the board and asks which one is positive, negative and questions. He highlights the contractions as well.
the teacher puts the affirmative and negative forms of 'to be' on the board and explains the form, pronunciations and appropriacy of the target language. He tries to check students understanding of the target language before going to the next stage.
for this stage, the teacher gives students a fill in the blank exercise, but before that he has clarified the meaning of some vocabularies they will see in the exercise. students are going to put the correct verb(is/are)in in the blanks. before eliciting/giving the answer in whole class feedback the students are asked to check their answers with their partners.
first students are asked to the sentences according to the symbols in brackets. the teacher explains the first examples and then students do. when they are done, they are asked to check their answers with their partners. the next step would be eliciting/giving answer in whole class feedback. if there is enough time, students are asked to write the correct short answer for the next exercise. they have to read the questions individually and answer, then check it with their partners. Eliciting/giving answer in whole class will be done afterwards.
the teacher pairs the students, then tells them that they are going to have a piece of paper in which there are some questions. he tells them that they are going to ask and answer the questions. An adapted version of exercise 5 in page 137 will be given to the students as the freer practice in this stage. The teacher monitors the students and writes down the mistakes they might make. He also will be available if a they need help. If there is enough time, students are asked to practise it with new partners. Also, if there is still enough time, the teacher asks the students to practise the conversations they have listened today, but before practising they are asked to change the name of the car to the one they like and also replace their names with the characters in the conversation. feedback, correction and reformulation will be the done in last minutes of the class.
