Phrases for comparing
Intermediate (B2) level

Description

In this lesson the students will learn about how to form phrases for comparing.They will start the lesson by warm up activity where they give some background information about the cities in the pictures.Then they will listen to an audio which talk about some of the changes which happened to these two cities. After that they will move to answer some exercises. Finally they will do a free practice activity through a group discussion about their own cities by using phrases for comparing.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of phrases for comparing in the context of describing cities and towns

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about phrases for comparing in the context of cities and towns before and after changes

Procedure

Warm up (3-5 minutes) • active schemata

Teacher will present two pictures and ask students to identify them. Ss work in pairs and discuss these two pictures. Teacher provide the students with some information then get a feedback about that discussion.

Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide listening for inferences and specific information about comparing

Set listening Ex,2 Student listen and note down information for each conversation about how cities changing. Ss listen to two conversation then move to answer exercise. Ss will check their answers in pairs teacher checks if there were any problem with answers and plays the track again if needed Ss listen again and check their answers

Language Focus (5-7 minutes) • To provide clarification on meaning,form and pronunciation of the TL in the context of describing cities and towns

Elicit some examples from students about how to compare things Write down on the board the comparison forms, then explain these forms and how we could use it. provide students with different examples e.g: This city is completely different from the past e.g: This bag is exactly the same as mine e.g: This car is slightly different from my car Ask students to write down at least two sentences using such as this stuff Ss will move to exercise number one and two then they have to answer i and check their answers in pairs .

Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide practice and concept check of the TL and prepare Ss for freer activity

Ss match and put the form in statement then practice with partner. Ss peer check. Teacher gets FBK from Ss and clarify the problems. Ss then work with another partner and discuss the phrases they wrote. Teacher monitors and recording any errors to deal wih them later on the WB

Free practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide fluency speaking of the TL about comparing things in the context of describing towns and cities

Tell Ss to get a list of information about their own city in the past and how it is now Try as possible as they can to compare these differences and similarities in one group using the words which on the board. Teacher monitors and records any errors to deal on them later
