To provide detailed reading practice using a text about What is written in your palm? in the context of Fortune telling
Procedure (37-52 minutes)
Teacher will start by asking Ss to work in pairs to discuss 3 different ways of talking about the future that they know. T. will then get FB from Ss and ask questions like: - What are the other ways of predicting the future? - Did you go to anyone to tell you about your future before? -What did he/she tell you? - Did it come true? - What is the the name of the person who tells you about your future? - What are the things he/she usually talk about? Students: Ss discuss the picture in pairs and then answer T.'s questions.
T. provides Ss. with a text to read on palm reading and answer a few questions. This is to familiarize them of the this way of telling fortune and and how it will be done. This will help them during speaking when they read each others' palms. - T. finally provides Ss with the answer key Students: Read the text, answer the questions and finally check their answers using the answer key provided by the teacher.
Teacher: T. highlights some of the expressions and sentences by making them in bold in the text e.g. Can I see the fortune teller, please?, Can you read my palm, please?, Hmm, I can see your life line is long and thick, this means that you are going to have a long, healthy life; Good! And how about my relationships, Mr. Rob?, etc. This language will help Ss practice the conversation in the controlled and practice stages by that are to follow. T. helps Ss with highlighted language through practicing the role play and modelling and drilling. This can happen between in pairs, in groups and between T. and the whole class.
Teacher: - T. will ask Ss to practice speaking the conversation in pairs. - Some Ss will be A and the others will be B. - A will be the fortune teller and B will be the one who wants to know about their future. Both will practice the conversation together and will refer back to the text about palm reading to get the right information. Students: Ss will take turns practicing the conversation in a mingling activity.
Teacher: T. will use the notes he has taken while the Ss were speaking to highlight the mistakes Ss have been making on the WB.
