Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present simple and present continuous in the context of special occasions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about special occasions in the context of 'how is Imogen spending her national holiday?'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the students to look at the picture and guess what are the people in the picture working for ?

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

l will ask the students to read the text to answer the question A.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask the students to discuss in a group "what are the tenses in bold and italics?"

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

l will ask the students to choose the correct tense for each rule and add an example from the text to identify the meaning and the use of present simple and present continuous.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask the students to complete the paragraph about Carlos with the present simple or present continuous.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will ask the students to write some sentences about Juliet, using the picture and the ideas to help.

More practice (4-5 minutes) • make sure that the students identified the difference between present simple and present continuous.

l will ask the students to choose the correct form to complete the sentences : present simple or present continuous.

Free Practice (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
