Main Aims
-
To provide review and practice of the past simple and past continuous tenses in the context of lottery game playing.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a story in the context of a lottery winner in the past simple or past continuous.
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
We'll refer to the reading they did and discuss why it was in the past simple and past continuous. Ask students questions about the use in story-telling of past simple/continuous.
Students will have two sentences on the board in past continuous and past simple which will provide the context for the rules of use on these two verbs. Students will work in pairs and then the rules will be elicited from the Students.
Minimal time will be spent with the affirmative, negative and question form of the past simple and past continuous as well as with form.
Students will write an intro to a story using the past continuous and the importance of this tense for such intros will be elicited from students.
Students will be given Task 2, where they complete two true stories, putting the given verbs in brackets in the past simple or past continuous. Students will check with their partner if they've got the right verbs and then check with the key.
Students will have several questions on the board which will relate to a story about a lottery winner they'll have to make up. Ss work in pairs and write the story, which they then practice by telling another pair.
In case there is more time left, Ss will extend the story they wrote about the lottery winner moving on 1 year after the big win.
