To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Health and the well being of children in the context of playing unsupervised outside

To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of overprotective parents
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
- T asks ss: "Did you like playing outdoors when you were children?" "Did it make you happy?" (yes/no)
- Ss look at pics (1 + 2 ) projected on OHP, then T asks "What do you see? "How do they seem?" (play, playground, happy, fun, unhappy, scared, worried...) - T tells ss to focus on pictures 2, then T asks; " What can you say about the mom here?" - T elicits (overprotective) "Do you think the boy wants to play?"(No) " what do you think he prefers to do?" (stay indoors) T elicits 'sedentary lifestyle'. "Are they active when they have a sedentary lifestyle?"(No) "What do they do all day?" (Sit/sleep/TV/eat..) "What might happen to their body?" (they might get fat) What is another word for that? Elicit 'obese' - focus on picture1(included in the article) T elicits 'risky play' " Is he scared?" (No) "Is it a dangerous game?" (yes) "What might happen to him?" (falls and gets injured) " - In pairs ss discuss " What are some risky games you played when you were a child?" - T asks " Can you guess what the text will be about?"
- T asks ss to look at title of the text " does it match your predictions?" - T tells students to read the text and answer reading task 1 (scan reading): Q1 (a+b) in handout (Time set = 1-2 mins) - Ss check their answers in pairs. Then T gives whole class feedback ( ask for justification)
- T gives instructions for task2S : Read the text and answer with 'True' or 'False' - SS read the text again and answer Q2 in the handout, individually. -T monitors ss (help when needed) - Ss peer check then - T gives correction and whole class feedback (ss should justify their answers from the text)
- Open discussion (Whole class) " Did you experience playing unsupervised outdoors when you were a child?" " What impact did it have on you" - T gives instructions for speaking task ( Debate) "Do you agree or disagree with the views expressed in the text about ‘risky play’?" - SS with the same views work in the same group - T monitors while ss prepare their arguments - SS take part in debate ( Ss nominate members of their group to speak) - T gives feedback
