  • to unblock key lexis needed to help students unlock the text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students. To generate interest in the theme of the lesson.

Work in pairs to teach meditation to each other. Have a student come up and try to teach the meditation technique to the students to get them to warm up. Have the students look at power point picture of the movie You've Got Mail and ask the students if they have seen the movie or know the actors who play in the movie/ what it's about.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and unblock lexis for the listening

Group the students into pairs according to a and b. Have the students play a game of charades by instructing them to mime the words that I will hand out without speaking convey the meaning so the partner can guess the word written down. The partner will then write down the answer they believe it to be. Afterwards discuss how these words might relate to the listening. Refer to the picture on the powerpoint

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask them the question, who are the characters in the story? Have students listen to the passage. Give them a task of ordering the correct sequence from the story on their desks. Have them listen to the recording again to see if the events are in the correct order. Write the events up on the board in the right order. Group in groups of 3 in different places in the room and have them paste the correct order on the right section.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Have students get into two groups-Joe and Kathleen and to take the printed out notes to paste them onto the board to fill in the gaps. Entice them to compete as this is a game so first team to get all the words wins.

Post Listening/Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned... to close the session

Write on the board phrases and have the students come up with a story to work out in order of what happens to make a love story. Help them choose the first sentence if they can't come up with anything.
