Main Aims

  • To provide practice in gist reading using the context of text ' Politically Incorrect'

  • To teach and provide clarification of meanings of various words and phrases from the text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts the lesson by asking : -What sort of things make people feel most embarrased? -Do you think politicians ever feel guilty or embarrassed about things they have done?

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- SS complete the sentences with the words in the box.(EX1) a) squirmed ( When you squirm, you show your discomfort or embarassment by moving and twisting around a lot on your chair or where you are standing) b)acutely ( adv.a feeling is felt strongly) c)blush ( when you blush the color of your skin on your face goes redder) d)bright e)humiliating ( If sth is humiliating, it causes you to be embarrassed or ashemed in a way that makes you feel very small or stupid in other people's eyes) f)ashamed g)conscious

While-Reading (8-12 minutes) • To practice reading for main idea ( gist)

-Ask SS skim the two texts to see the gist - What mistakes did these two men make? ( Gloystein poured a bottle of champagne over the head of a homeless man and then attempted to bribe him) (Prescott hit a man who had thrown an egg at him during the general election campaign) -EX2 Ask SS to read the sentences first then read the texts again and mark the sentences that refer to Gloystein with a G and ones that refer to Prescott with a P

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-SS think of some small mistakes they have made in their lives which made them feel embarressed -talk to their partners about them -partners gives past advice -swap the pairs
