TP2
Intermadiate B1 level
Main Aims
-
To give Ss practice reading, in particular skim reading for gist, scanning for specific information and deducting meaning through the context about Australia.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Australia(famous people, animals, climate, cities, history, things to do)
Procedure (40-54 minutes)
- Write the vocabulary from Speaking ex 1 on to the w/b. - Show them the pictures of Australia and ask them 'Do you have any idea which country this is?' and elicit ideas about Australia. -Stick 'Aborigine' and 'the outback' on the w/b - Put the Ss into small groups (at their tables) & ask them to share everything they know about Australia using the pictures & category prompts on the w/b to help them. Ss discuss their ideas - Take some general w/c FB.
-Tell Ss they are going to read a text about Australia, but first we’ll look at some vocabulary. - Show the Ss the HO & tell them to decide if they know or don’t know the words & put them in the appropriate column. Ss work alone to consider vocabulary - Then put Ss into small groups – Ss help each other with the words – teaching each other if another S doesn’t know. - Then deal w/c with any words that no one knows
-Check that Ss know what a “web diary” is & tell them they’re going to read one about a trip around Australia. Set the questions in Reading ex 1 and tell Ss to read the first part only quickly to answer the questions. Ss skim read. - Get Ss to peer check – then take w/c FB.
-Focus Ss on the statements in ex 2. Tell Ss to read the second part of the text & decide if they are true or false. Ss read and decide on answers - Get Ss to peer-check – do w/c FB.
-Focus Ss on ex 3 and tell them to work together to find adjectives in the text used to describe different things, e.g. people (do the first example w/c to check Ss know what they’re doing) - Ss check against an answer key – deal with any problems, questions Ss have
- Ask Ss if they’d like to go to Australia after reading about it, tell them to talk about this in pairs.
