Description

Grammar lesson about present perfect.

Materials

Abc Straight Forward- Int -U2a

Main Aims

  • Language focus: To review and extend Ss' knowledge of present perfect simple for experience through controlled, semi-controlled and freer practice and by contrasting it with simple past, through the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to practice speaking for accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Refer briefly back to the reading from the previous lesson – get Ss to tell you about the man & his travels. -Try to elicit one Simple Past sentence, e.g. He went to South America. & put this on the w/b. - Ask Ss what tense this sentence is – elicit Simple Past (or Past Simple) - Tell Ss to work together to find examples of simple past in the text & underline them, & circle examples of Present Perfect Simple

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Take w/c FB - & write one of the Present Perfect Simple sentences onto the w/b, e.g. His journey has already taken thirteen mounths . Ask Ss the questions in ex 1. - Analyse the form – eliciting the parts of the sentence & underlining them in another colour : Subject + auxiliary verb (or helping verb) have/had + past participle (or Verb 3) and drawing a timeline : ---------------------------?-----?---> X--------------x--------------------x----------------------------------------x past now future - Give Ss HO1 – made from the grammar box - & get them to match Simple Past & Present Perfect Simple with the definitions. Ss do this together – then take w/c FB. Think about drilling some examples.

Extension (7-10 minutes) • To compare Simple past and Present Perfect and consider how they are used

- Put the word “ago” on the w/b, & ask Ss if we normally use it with Simple Past or Present Perfect. - Give Ss the cut-up time expressions from the grammar box (yesterday, since, etc.) and get them to work together to match them with the appropriate verb form (They could do this by sticking the cut-ups on the walls under pre-prepared headings.). Get the Ss to check each other’s answers, then give them an answer key so they have a written record.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Give Ss some controlled practice in the TL, by doing ex 2. Ss work together to choose the correct answers -Give the Ss answer keys

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Give Ss some further controlled practice in the TL, by doing ex 3. Ss work together to fill in the gaps choosing between Simple Past & Present Perfect Simple -Get Ss to check their answers against the answer keys

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • – To give Ss semi-controlled practice in the TL, and the opportunity for freer speaking and personalisation.

Tell Ss they will interview 3 other Ss in the class using the questions from ex 3 – not the people at their table. Tell them they should make short notes of the answers. -Regroup Ss stand up & move around (mingle) asking & answering the questions -Ss go back to their tables & compare their answers with the others at their table. Ss try to find some common points between the Ss in the group. -Take some general w/c FB – Ss report some of their findings to the w/c
