Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice reading as the main aim and speaking as the sub-aim. The context of the lesson is lifestyle changes. All of the Ss are adults from about 20-50 years old. Total number of Ss varies from 14-15. Most of Ss are fairly on the same level except a few who have a higher command of English. The ones with higher strength tend to help the weaker ones. It is a motivated team as a whole. Ss are cooperative, friendly and mature. They do their best to follow TIs. Turkish is used occasionally amongst Ss for clarification but Ts try to return Ss' attention to speaking English. Ss have developed a good rapport amongst themselves and with Ts which with helps the smooth operation of the class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce the warmer/lead-in by, 1. Displaying some pictures to elicit 'lifestyle changes' from Ss. 2. Displaying more pictures to elicit 'quit smoking' from Ss. 3. Displaying more pictures to elicit 'help/life coaching" from Ss.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Put Ss in pairs. 2. Ask Ss to discuss the following questions. - Your best friend wants to quit smoking. What's the best way to help them? - When your friend needs help, is it best to give them advice or to listen? 3. CCQs. - what do you do? 4. ICQs - You discuss and answer questions. 5. Ask Ss to share some of their answers with WC.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Pre-teach key-words: - Willpower: is a mental strength to do or not to do something. - Pinpoint: something, you find exactly what a thing is or exactly where it is. - Barrier: something that stops you from doing something. 2. Put Ss into A and B pairs - Instruct group A to read the introduction and text A and answer the questions. - Instruct group B to read the introduction and text B and answer the questions. 3. Provide group A with a yellow sheet of paper to write the answers on. 4. Provide group B with a blue sheet of paper to write the answers on. 5. Provide both groups with the HO. 6. CCQs and ICQs to make sure that Ss are clear on what they are supposed to do. 7. Monitor Ss. 8. After Ss are done with reading and answering the questions, ask them to compare their answers with their partners. 9. Provide Ss with answer key and go through the answers with WC if necessary.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Ask Ss to exchange their color sheets so that group A is B and group B is A. 2. Ask each group to read the corresponding text ( A or B ) 3. Each pair works together to find either in text A or text B the answers to the following questions. Explain to Ss that sometimes the answers are given in both texts. - How long has Ginny been trying to give up smoking? - How long have Ginny and Brian been working together? - What did Brian and Ginny talk about in their first session? - What was the first step Ginny decided to take? - What will Ginny be telling Brian about at this week's session? - What is the next step going to be? - When do they think she'll have given up smoking? 4. Monitor Ss while they are working. 5. Provide Ss with answer key. 6. Go through the answers with the WC if necessary.

Post-Reading/Listening (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Put Ss in different pairs. 2. Provide Ss with the HO. 3. Ask Ss to discuss the questions below. a) Do you know anyone who has given up, ( or tried to give up ) smoking? How did they do it? b) Do you think that going to a life coach is a good way to stop smoking? c) Have you ever made a significant change to your lifestyle? What was it? Did you find it difficult? 4. Share some of the answers with WC if time allows/necessary.
