Main Aims
-
To provide gist and specific informtion reading practice using a text about alternative therapies within the context of workplace stress
Subsidiary Aims
-
to provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation within the context of workplace stress
Procedure (32-48 minutes)
Students will brainstorm about pictures of people looking stressful, tired, overwhelmed in their workplace and compare them to other pictures in which workers look happy and meditating in their office. In pairs, students will discuss about what these pictures mean to them. After a quick discussion students will express their thoughts in the class. What do you think about these pictures? Do you think there is a solution for workplace stress? Let's compare the difference between the two pictures. Why do think these workers look happier? Do you think the design of the workplace affects the worker's well-being?(color,smell) How?
Students will work on a fill in the blanks exercise. They will write down the correct vocabulary in the blank. Only meaning will be clarified. FB will be done with the WC
Students will be provided with a gist question after the teacher clarifies what the text is about. Students will skim the text quickly and check their answer with their partner. The gist question will be; " What kind of alternative therapies are mentioned in the text?" After peer-checking, FB will be done with the WC.
Students will read the text in detail and do a "complete the text with the extracts" exercise. ICQ: Are you working together or alone? After peer-checking, students will be provided with an answer key. FB will be done with the WC, if necessary. Students will discuss about the therapies mentioned in the text. " Do you think they help?"
The teacher will elicit the words and CCQ the students. After clarifying meaning, form and pronunciation, some collocations, plural forms of the words, job names and parts of speech will be highlighted. Drilling will be used to practice pronunciation. (therapy, therapist, morale, counterbalance, enthusiasm, stimulate)
The students will do a role-play activity where they assume different jobs such as a doctor, an engineer, a hostess, a teacher, an artist, and a waiter. The other half will be therapists. The students will work in pairs. They will sit facing each other. The students who assumed different professions will cover their professions. They will talk about why their jobs are stressful. They will elaborate on stressful events they face in their workplace. Each patient must visit at least 2 therapists. The therapists will guess their patients' jobs and advise them about how to cope with stress. They will provide them with ways to boost productivity and reduce work-related stress. The therapists' task will be to guess his/her partner's job and to give advice whereas the ones with different job titles will have to come up with stressful events related to the jobs they are assuming. At the end, the therapists will decide "which job is the most stressful one?" The other half will decide "which advice is the most useful one?" ICQ those with different professions: Are you going to tell the therapist what your job is? Are you going to talk about stress? ICQ therapists: Are you going to guess their jobs? Are you giving them advice? The teacher will start monitoring and take notes of the pronunciation mistakes.
students will do a "complete the text with the phrases on the box" exercise. FB will be done with the WC.
