Procedure (41-52 minutes)
Tell the Ss 'let's go back in time'. Project your picture from your childhood birthday party. Ask the Ss what they see in the picture. Ask the Ss who the little girl might be. Ask the Ss to guess your age in the picture. Tell Ss that you were born in 1993 and tell them to guess the year.
Tell Ss to take a look at the picture on the projector. Ask them what they see, how many people there are. Tell them they are going to listen and read text and discuss who is talking. Elicit answers. Get them in pairs. HO the reading text HO. Project the reading text on the WB. Then, tell them to work in pairs underline the "place", " number of people", " people not at the party", " food", and "drink". Elicit Ss' answers on the WB. Answers: place: Perth, Australia number of people: 40 people not at the party: her grandfather and two brothers food: burgers and chicken drink: coke and orange juice
Ask the Ss was the grandfather at the party? No. Were her two brothers at the party? No. Draw a time-line on the WB and ask Ss to ask when the party takes place according to the text. Mark 'yesterday'. Tell Ss to do the next exercise in pairs. Tell them to circle the correct option. Give them the HO. Provide them with an answer key to check their answers.
Project the text from the previous activity on the WB. Ask the following questions: "When was her birthday party? 1975. Where was the party? In the village hall. How many people were there? 20. Were there any boys at the party? No. Was the party good? No. Write these on the WB from the exercise HO: I was thirteen in 1975. Our house wasn't big. Only about 20 people were there. There weren't any boys. Ask the Ss which one is plural which one is singular. Underline the adjectives and places ask the Ss to identify the word family. Draw a substitutional table on the WB. Ask Ss to complete it in pairs. Drill the sentences with them.
Give Ss a questionnaire about their last birthday parties. Give them 5 mins to complete it. Tell them they will ask their pairs the same questions on the questionnaire and answer the questions. Then when they find information about their friends they will change their pairs and talk about their answers to the other pairs.
Write some of their common mistakes on the WB and elicit their corrections
