Listening for gist
Procedure (40-48 minutes)
At the beginning of the session, different images will be stuck on the whiteboard (images showing telephoning) and the listeners will be put in pairs. Then, split phrases linked to telephoning written on slips of paper, e.g. telephone/call, mobile/phone, hold/ the line, leave/a message, etc., will be given to the students. Then the students will have to find the person with the other half and will stick it below the right image.
An image of two calling people will be shown to the listeners and will be explained, as preparation for the forthcoming audio. The two people from the audio dialogue will be introduced and presented as with intention for better recognition of roles.
Copies from ex. 1 will be given to the students before the listening of the dialogue. Then the students will listen to the audio. The audio will be listened twice, and after the audio the students will check with partner. The audio length is 2.30 minutes. After the listening and check a script will be given to the students to check it again.
Ex. 2a. and b. p.24. Check answers in pairs and then listen for highlighted audio to check. Audio length 46 seconds.
Ex. 3a. Put the words in order and create question sentences then check in pairs.
One of the listeners will be called to sit with the teacher in front of the board. Then a demo will be made. The demo will be about a conversation between a costumer who has problems with her/his internet connection and an employed in Turk Telekom.
The listeners in pairs will do ex.5a and ex.5b. They will role-play based on cards on p.126. They will change roles and maybe change partners. Feedback and error correction.
