Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific listening for details in the context of personal information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide function (personal info and speaking)

Procedure

Warmer (4-5 minutes) • To review previous lesson on jobs

T will write JOBS on the WB, take out 2 prepared coloured Flashcards, show them to the Ss and then demonstrate by modelling with one of the Ss as such: T: What is your job? SS: I am a MUSICIAN. SS: What is YOUR job? T: I'm a DOCTOR. After the demonstration, the remaining coloured cards will be handed out to the Ss and the T will ask them to work in pairs asking each other about their jobs.

Warmer Game (8-10 minutes) • to separate the friends who always sit (and sometimes hide) besides each other

T asks all Blue card holders get up and stand to one side of the CW and all the Red card holders to stand on the other side of the CW. T then asks the Blue card holders to stick their cards randomly on the WB and return to their side and then asks the same of the Red card holders. T then selects one person from the Blue Team to come up to the front and T will show the S a job prewritten on a piece of paper which the S will have 30 secs to mime for his/her team. The team who guesses 3 jobs first wins.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the context of the lesson concerning personal info

T asks Ss to remain in their team color group but in groups of 3 or 2 (depending on the amount of students that day). T gestures Ss to LISTEN to audio concerning email address. CD1-40, CD1-41 T asks a student or two to write their email address on the WB. T asks SS to spell out email address, emphasizing on the pronunciation by drilling of @ (at) and . (dot).

Lead-In (5-6 minutes) • To review vowels while preparing students to describe their personal info

T will write the vowels on the WB asking SS to repeat them in preparation for the HO that will be distributed to each of them so they can gap-fill sentences with vowels in the context of personal info. When activity is done, T will ask SS to read out loud, their completed sentences so they can also practice their pronunciation.

Gist Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

SS are asked by T to look at the photo projected on the WB. SS are then asked to listen to the audio CD1-42 concerning the conversation between the two people. T then asks SS WHO? prompting them to explain anything about the photo they are looking at and the audio they listened to. T then asks the Ss WHERE? T then confirms in short and concise sentences that these are Karen & Peter. Karen is applying for membership at the gym where Peter works. Peter asks her to fill out a personal profile form.

Post-Listening Activity (5-7 minutes) • To introduce activity related to the listening

T passes out the Gym membership form to all the SS and asks them to interview their friend and fill out their form.
