Description

In this reading lesson, students are introduced to the the topic by the means of images and questions to elicit the answers from the class.They are encouraged to brainstorm about the topic with their partners by looking at the title and the pictures. Then, Ss will read for the gist and for specific information. They then skim the text to check if their initial thought were correct and to answer specific information questions, Finally, there will be a discussion time for the class to ponder on the ideas presented in the article within groups.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Twitter accounts in the context of social media

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of using social media and impacts

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks the students to think about some countries that will hold the upcoming Olympics or World Cup games. T asks if any of the learners has ever been to any of such events. T Asks if any the learners uses social media such as twitter or FB in order to get information or inform other friends about such games.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teaches some necessary words that might block the comprehension of the students. Students match the words with their definitions and check with their partners. T gives the answer key.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks the class to look at the title and the pictures in the article and guess what the text might be about. T asks the class to read for the gist and check their answers. T elicits some answers from the class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T asks the students to work individually and answer the questions in HO1. 1. Why did authorities in Brazil needed @riodejaneri Twitter account? 2. Did Mr. Castano ask for money? 3. When did Mr. Castano start registering Twitter accounts? 4. What other countries did he register? 5. What was he doing before he became a shoe shiner? 6. Did Japanese government accept his offer to give away @japan account? Why/Why not? Students check their answers with a partner. T provides the answer key.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students work in pairs and think about future World Cup games and discuss their favorite teams and plans in they want to watch the games on TV or travel to the host country.
