Procedure (31-45 minutes)
SS in 3 or 4 groups. OHP the family photo. CCQ: Who are these people? Are they happy? Why? Give groups 2 minutes to discuss. GW Get opinions and set context: Today we will talk about family problems.
SS in 4 groups. Groups find two names for their personas, 1 male 1 female Assign a problem to each group. SS write the problems in full sentences in the HO provided. Solo Ask SS to memorize their sentences. Solo Groups study their problem. GW (Optional) Ask SS if they know anyone with the same problem. T - W/C
OHP "Practice and Advice" slide. T - W/C CCQ for problems: Is this a good thing? Are you happy when this happens? What is this? (A problem) CCQ for advice: (Before showing them) What do we say here? On WB, clarify the M/F/P of "If I were you, I'd + base form" "I think you should + base form" "How about + Verb + -ing" Family photo Elicit: Problem: They fight all the time. Advice: I think they should see a family consultant.
Stage 3 Ask SS to write a piece of advice using "If I were ..., I'd + base form" "I think he/she should + base form" "How about + Ving + ?" Groups practice giving advice about their character. GW Monitor closely for MFP errors.
Write SS errors collected during Stage 3. Ask SS if they can spot the errors. T - W/C Conduct error correction. Drill M/F/P if necessary.
Tell SS that they are the characters now. Regroup them into different 4 groups. Make sure every group has four different problems. Demo the task: One S describes his/her problem, others give advice. GW Monitor closely for MFP errors.
Stage 4 Put SS errors on WB. Ask them to spot the errors or point them out. Elicit correction.
