Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put SS in groups of 3-4 Project "at the doctor's" image on WB CCQ Where are they? (Hospital) Who are they? (Doctor&patient) Is he happy? Why? (No. He's sick/ill) What do they say? (Elicit the conversation below) Patient: My stomach hurts. Doctor: You've got acid reflux.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

OHP and distribute New Headway p.69 ex.1-2 Ask SS to match the pictures with illnesses in ex.1 Solo Ask SS to compare answers. PW Play recording 8.8 for answers. OHP (Doctor&patient) visual Ask SS to work alone and listen to the conversation and fill in the blanks. Solo Play the conversation (Twice if necessary) At the end of the conversation, ask SS to check answers in pairs. PW Distribute the answer key and ask SS to check together. GW Ask if they have any questions for feedback.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Distribute the listening HO with the questions and ask SS to work alone to answer the questions. Solo Play the recording. (Twice if necessary) Ask SS to check answers in pairs. PW Give the answer key and ask to discuss in their group. GW On WB, clarify the M/F/P of; What seems to be the problem? (CCQ: What's wrong? What's the matter?) I can't stop coughing. (CCQ: Do I cough once? Twice? All the time? I keep being sick and I've got a terrible headache. (CCQ: Do I vomit once? Twice? All the time?) I start sneezing and itching when I'm near a cat. (CCQ: When do I start sneezing?) T - W/C

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

(The answer key for the gap-fill HO given to SS in the previous stage acts as the script of this controlled practice.) Ask SS to listen to the conversation and follow it from the script. Solo Then, put SS in pairs and ask them to act the conversation. At the end of one run, SS switch roles and act it once more. PW (Monitor closely for errors and keep a record for delayed error correction.)

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice with the language studied

Put SS into two groups as "patients" and "doctors" Distribute role-play HOs and ask patients to write the symptoms and the doctors to write the diagnosis and advice on HOs. GW Collect HOs, shuffle them and give them back to SS Ask patients to find a doctor and ask doctors to give advice to their patients. PW (Monitor closely and keep a record of errors for delayed correction.)
