To provide ss with speaking practice using modals for obligations and necessity in the context of "Essential Steps for Success"
Procedure (37-51 minutes)
GROUPING: -Group ss into 2 or 3 groups. WB: (Teacher projects video of athlete's routine preparing for races.) -Give the lead in HO - Play-the-video. - Stop-the-video. -Who was that? -Anybody here loves swimming? -Who loves sports? -All the great people in sports, are they the best because they were born with skills or they train and turn themselves into champions? (use lead in HO) -Give them 3 minutes to look and write 3 things on how to become a champion.
(clear the WB) TASK: -Give ss the dialog-in-london HO -Ask ss to: read in 3 minutes. read alone. don't discuss. -ICQ: what are you going to do? read or write? how long? read alone or together? -GW ask students to discuss what is going on 3 minutes is there a good or bad person in the dialog? why? -ICQ what are you going to discuss? alone or within your group? GWFB -Ask group1 what is going on? -All agree? seek other views -Ask group2 What do the underlined words mean? -All agree?

Give example scenarios - for WBFB -draw have to and don't have to do columns -you are a student, exam is next week - what do you have to do & don't have to do -you are going into the library - what do you have to do & don't have to do Set 5mins task Ss to write answers on WB
Get students into 2 groups. -3 minutes Get group1 students to say 2 lines using "have to" or "had to" to their partner - based on their life or personal experience or made up experience. Get group2 students to reply using "don't have to" or "didn't have to" - based on their partner's input or made up experience.
