Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of Present Perfect in the context of lives
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide gist reading practice using a text about a House with History in the context of two people's lives
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
I will ask to give few names of famous people who lived in Istanbul more than 100 years ago. I will write on the board a sentence: ... lived in Istanbul more than 100 years ago.
Ask Ss if anyone who they'll have mentioned is still alive or all of them died. I'll mention a concept of finished past action and introduce a concept of an action that started in past but hasn't finished yet or its influence continues into present. I'll write a sentence on the WB: I have lived in Istanbul for three years. CCQs: When did I start living in Istanbul? (3 years ago), Do I still live in Istanbul? (yes)
I'll project two pictures on the WB, of a young man and of Karl Marx. Then, I'll ask about who's still alive (the young man). I'll draw a timeline with their lives and corresponding marking of two tenses. HO1 will be provided
The Ss will work through the adapted material of New Headway Pre-Intermediate Students Book which will consist of two readings with Present Perfect and Past Simple and matching it questions. Group check will be provided and WC quick feedback. V3 form is to be mentioned and the table of irregular words should be given out. Elicit negative forms of two tenses. Pronunciation of contraction and third person forms will be drilled as WC.
Then, the second part of HO1 will be put into work with 'for' (period of time) and 'since' (moment in time).
Individual work on one sentence in Present Perfect about Ss have done (achieved) at this course. Group check.
Ss work in pairs and ask two questions: How long have you lived in Istanbul? and How long have you studied English? ICQ: Which tense are you going to use? After the task, mingle WC and ask to share with other Ss the info about the partner. Delayed error correction during feedback.
